Guest column: We don’t get to choose which laws to ignore

Decades ago I worked with a scofflaw. He was a nice-enough guy, but he resented authority and seemed to believe that he should be free to ignore any law that was inconvenient. He hunted deer out of season and without obtaining a license, fished the same way and drove his rig despite having his driver’s license suspended. This, of course, lead to frequent run-ins with law enforcement and the courts and, as a result, he despised both the cops and the judges.
