Fremont Middle School student Kaitlyn Barrett wants to travel to Europe one day. In the meantime, she enjoys a good armchair adventure. “I love books because they take you to places you’ve never been before,” said Kaitlyn, 12, a sixth grader. That love of books helped Kaitlyn’s team earn second place in its division in the Battle of the Books Saturday. Teams from Douglas, Coos and Lane counties competed in the tournament, which is part of the 12th annual Celebration of Literacy. The winners will go to state competition in Salem in April.
