Roseburg School Board struggles to simultaneously deal with budget and enrollment

The Roseburg School Board has linked passing a levy with preventing a school closure. But officials warn that even if the district receives more money, closing a school may be inevitable because of declining enrollment. “It’s not just a financial issue, it’s an efficiency issue,” school board Chairman Steve Patterson said. “As far as our capacity goes, we’re under capacity, and we can certainly absorb a school closure.” The school board has gone back and forth over the past several months on whether it will seek a levy or close one of the district’s nine elementary schools, an idea that …
