Truth of Youth: Should Oregon abolish the death penalty?

“Absolutely not! Oregon needs the death penalty in order to establish true justice. But execution doesn’t act as a deterrent! One might object. Consider this. Last year in the U.S. there were upwards of 12,000 murders. But last year there were only 43 executions in the entire country. The death penalty won’t be a deterrent to a criminal if they know there is only a .003 percent chance of being executed for their crime. And now that Gov. John Kitzhaber has declared a moratorium on the death penalty, it’s clear there won’t be any executions until someone else is elected …
