Timber industry sues to clip spread of spotted owl habitat

A timber industry lawsuit filed Thursday seeks to reverse a federal designation of 9.6 million acres of forest land in Oregon, Washington and California as critical habitat to the threatened northern spotted owl. American Forest Resource Council, Carpenters Industrial Council and a group of timber companies and private landowners filed the suit in federal district court in Washington, D.C., against the Interior secretary and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service director. The Fish and Wildlife Service released its latest critical habitat designation for the spotted owl in November, nearly doubling the previous designation of 5.3 million acres in 2008. Timber …
