Age 77, “Sandy” was born, raised and thrived in Roseburg, Oregon, to parents Wallace and Helen (Strickland) Rapp. In 1953, as the generations before and after her, Sandy graduated from Roseburg High School as a member of the Drum and Bugle Corps and Cheerleader. Her pride and spirit for her alma mater continued, as she was a long-time ticket holder for Roseburg High School Athletics. She will most famously be known for her title as the one and only “Bleacher Bum Mom.”
Professionally, Sandy was a bookkeeper but held her career as a mother to five daughters with the most pride. Her passion for camping, rafting, hot summer days at Steamboat Falls, reading, puzzles, crocheting, gardening, history and above all music were always present in their lives. The sounds of ragtime songs on the piano, car rides filled with rounds of happy voices singing and the memory of their mother performing with the famous Danny Kaye will be woven in her family’s history forever.
Sandy was known to many of you as “Mom,” but she was mother to Shelley Savoie, children Brandon and Courtney; Shannon and Dennis Price, children Heather and Brandon; Desi Bova, children Beau, Morgan and Gavin; Rochelle and Stephen James; (preceded in death) Mickey and Bert Brundige, children Tatum and Blair. Her legacy continues with her great-grandchildren Coby, Kayla, Bryton, Carter, Coco, McLane, Chloe, Caleb, Brody, Arabella and the many more to come.
For the last nine years, Sandy has been in the greater Portland area where she could receive the specialized care she needed for her condition after experiencing complications from a brain aneurysm and finally succumbed to pneumonia. In her last days and hours, her loving family surrounded Sandy. And her daughters were able to hold her hand as she began to take her final journey with Jesus in Heaven.
A private family burial service will be held at Roseburg Memorial Gardens on Friday, June 7, 2013. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at Helleck’s Hall/Pitchford Community Center (near Riverforks Park) at 1p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her name to The RHS Class of 1953 Scholarship Foundation care of 2040 NW Delridge Avenue, Roseburg, OR 97471.
