Marla Smart: Don't let distance interfere with friendship

Yesterday, I received an email from a friend. I share a very close connection with her. We have similar beliefs, interests and even passions. She is someone I know I can trust with my deepest thoughts and I think she feels the same way about me. We live about 30 miles apart and we hardly ever see each other. Isn’t that sad?

At the end of her email, she wrote, “Even though we don't see each other, we still wear the same shoes.” I thought that was a very fitting way to describe us. We are friends because we can relate clearly. Our lives have taken similar paths and we have known that our friendship is special because of that.

It was so fun to find her email in my inbox. Most of the emails I get are no fun. It made me realize we need our friendships, in whatever form they come. We don’t always have time and resources to spend on “Mommy’s Day Out.” Maybe this is another avenue we, as moms, can consider to foster our relationships. I guess it’s kind of like having a pen pal.

I would love to spend more time with her. I don’t know if that will happen very often because of children, schedules and just doing our own lives. But I have decided not to let that be a hindrance to our friendship. It may seem silly to use email as the main connection to someone who lives so close. It just may be the only way to stay connected.

Treasure your friendships. Every one of them has something to add to your life, and you are adding to theirs as well. Look for ways to keep in touch and build deep, meaningful connections to people who you can trust. With all the ways to connect, distance is no longer an issue to building relationships. Use that to your advantage!
