Jemelene Wilson: Kids on the Cruise

We had a great time at Graffiti Weekend. With family in town we got to show off Roseburg along with the sweet community we love so much. Saturday night as the cars rumbled up Jackson and down Main Street to the delight of families perched on the curbs and chairs on the sidewalks. We were handed bottled waters and snow cones on Douglas by two youth organizations. We all had a great time.

Every year we get a kick out of having young kids ride with us around the loop. This time we knew a ten year old who was celebrating his birthday. He was born on graffiti night a decade ago. His cousin would be coming along so we set it up with his parents to pick them up. I'm not sure either boy knew we were coming.

As they slid in the front seat next to my husband they were both informed that their job was to wave at the children sitting on the sidewalks. At first they were hesitant but with each passing wave they became bold and confident. They both politely refused snow cones and without a word began waving again as we approached another crowd.

It was priceless.

We shuffled other riders in and out along the way. One woman who has never ridden in the cruise, my niece from California, all of our own kiddos and the friend who sold us our beloved “Betty Lou”.

Each year she is on the same corner, waiting to see us turn and waving wildly as she admires her old friend. Every year so far we have been able to give her a ride around the loop. As she jumps in she admires the upkeep, reminisces with us and captures a new memory to sock away until next year.

It reaffirms what I wrote last week. It is more about community than it is about cars. It's about laughter in friendships old and new. It's about making new memories for the young families who call Douglas County home. It's about taking an ordinary weekend in July and creating something unique for now and for the future.

Jemelene Wilson is married with two daughters and a son-in-law. Read her Tuesdays on Douglas County Moms. Also check out her personal blog here.
