Well, school has started for some and will very soon for others. This year is an interesting one for me. My oldest is in her second year of college, my middle child is a high school senior, and my baby is a freshman. The world is changing before my eyes. We’re entering a new season at our house, and although I’m excited for what’s happening, it has made me a bit nostalgic for what once was.
We’ve traded elementary class productions (where every parent and grandparent is in the audience with camera in hand) for sports games. Parent-planned class parties have changed to being told how the students decide to celebrate. We have become much busier after school, too, because on top of lots of homework, they have jobs and social events.
It’s trying as a parent to let go a little more with each birthday. I love my kids so much and a part of me doesn’t really want them stop being little people who need me to make all their decisions and lead them through activities I have chosen for them. But I know it’s time.
Our parents had to let go, as did theirs, and so on. So now I must join the ranks of all those who have gone before me and step back as my precious kids start making plans and decisions for themselves. It’s hard, but it’s the right thing to do.
So, all you parents of younger kids than mine, enjoy sitting through school productions and planning parties. They eventually come to an end and you will all be onto different (but exciting!) adventures.
