Bail set for Reedsport murder suspect

Bail has been set at $500,000 for a Reedsport resident suspected of murder in the stabbing death of a man outside an apartment building Saturday.

Michael Lee Corrie, 34, was arraigned Monday on suspicion of murdering Shawn Michael Christian, 37, of Reedsport.

The homicide is one of two over the weekend being investigated by the multi-agency Douglas County Major Crimes Team.

In Myrtle Creek, sheriff’s deputies Sunday morning found the body of William Joe Bruton, 57, in his home in the 100 block of Ulam Lane.

The sheriff’s office did not release more information about the homicide investigations this morning.

Several residents of the apartment building where Christian was slain declined to comment on the confrontation between the two men.

The sheriff’s office said deputies and Reedsport police responded at about 7 p.m. to a report of the men fighting. Christian was stabbed and pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said. An autopsy was conducted, but results have not been released.

Corrie was arrested several hours later and was booked into the Douglas County Jail. He was held without bail until his first appearance in Douglas County Circuit Court.

Bruton was found dead around 8:30 a.m., deputies said. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday, and the results remained unavailable today.

The sheriff’s office has not released any information about the circumstances of Bruton’s death or what aroused the suspicion of detectives.

Douglas County investigators already were faced with several unsolved homicides, including:.

Barbara Lea Tooley, 59, was shot to death by an intruder at her mother’s Glendale home on Oct. 1, 2009.

Thomas Hatcher-Ison, 40, was found dead by another tenant at his home in the 1500 block of S.E. Pine Street on April 8, 2010. He was a 1987 graduate of Glide High School.

Heather Lynn Thompson, 39, of Green was found dead on her property in the 100 block of Honey Lane on Aug. 5, 2010.

Deborah Natalie Schneider, 55, of Myrtle Creek was reported missing January 2011 by her family. Her remains were found last year in a heavily forested area north of Tenmile.

Robert Brink, 31, of Azalea was shot in the head in his garage on Dec. 31, 2011, in the 18000 block of Upper Cow Creek Road.

Paul Frederick Coates, 76, was found dead March 21, 2013, at his home at Loon Lake, just east of Reedsport. Coates owned a logging company.
