Arrest report describes fatal fight between Reedsport men

REEDSPORT — Two men in a deadly encounter Saturday night outside an apartment building had been involved with the same woman, according to an arrest report made available Thursday.

Michael Lee Corrie, 34, is being held on suspicion of murdering Shawn Michael Christian, 37, by stabbing him to death.

Corrie had fathered a child with the woman who was Christian’s current girlfriend, according to the report, which was filed with the Douglas County Circuit Court.

Deputy District Attorney Kathleen Johnson said an indictment will be filed soon. She said she could not comment further on the case.

Efforts to reach Corrie’s defense attorney, Don Scales of Medford, were unsuccessful.

Corrie, a Reedsport resident, has been in custody in the Douglas County Jail since his arrest early Sunday. He is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail.

According to the report by Douglas County sheriff’s Detective Bradley O’Dell, a witness told police that the two men began fighting outside the apartments at 2301 Longwood Drive just after 7 p.m. Saturday.

The witness said she had gone outside to smoke when Corrie and Christian arrived at the apartments about the same time walking in from different directions.

The witness said she saw both men take off their sweatshirts and begin rolling on the ground and throwing punches, but never saw a weapon. She said she called emergency dispatchers as the fight continued.

When she later looked out her window, she saw a lot of blood, she said. Christian was crawling, and Corrie got on top and raised his arm “in a striking motion,” the witness said.

Officers arrived shortly after that and handcuffed Corrie.

O’Dell noted that Christian had “multiple stab wounds on his body.”

Corrie told detectives there had been a problem between the men for about seven months and that they had fought before.

Corrie told detectives he was walking home with the mother of his child when Christian walked out of the bushes and the fight began.

Christian hit him on the side of the head and pinned him down, Corrie told officers. Christian hit him in the face, and Corrie said he tried to call for help but was unable to.

Corrie told detectives he pulled a knife out of his pocket. When Christian drew his fist back to strike again, he stabbed Christian in the neck, Corrie reportedly told detectives.

Detectives said there were no weapons found on Christian’s body.

Murder is a Measure 11 crime with a minium mandatory sentence of 25 years.
