FEATURE PHOTO: Coot skims Stewart Park duck pond

An American coot skips across the duck pond in Roseburg’s Stewart Park Wednesday. These grayish-black birds are often mistaken for ducks, in part because they have similar movements on open water and often feed with ducks, according to the National Audubon Society. Coots have a variety of dining habits: diving to the bottom of water, dabbling at the surface, grazing on the shoreline and stealing food from other diving birds. The wide lobes on their toes make them expert swimmers. However, their heft requires them to patter over the water before becoming airborne.
