Marla Smart: Homemade Instant Oatmeal Packets | Moms

I’m not much of a breakfast eater. I don’t think I have ever been. Timing is always the main hold up. I don’t give myself time to have a full sit down morning meal.

I make sure to provide things my kids will eat for breakfast, but they tend to lean toward fast and easy, like cereal, fruit and yogurt.

My husband is the breakfast chef of our family. It is his favorite meal and he loves to experiment.

In years past, he has taken it upon himself to prepare in advance sausage or bacon and egg biscuits that he then froze. The kids could get one to pop in the microwave and presto: A quick, but filling morning breakfast. He’s done the same thing with breakfast burritos.

Jerry’s newest venture is oatmeal packets. Oatmeal is pretty popular in the Smart household however, we don’t really care for the oatmeal packets you can purchase.

If you find a flavor you like, you will probably be stuck with a bunch of others you don’t like in the variety pack. And, I don’t really like the list of extra ingredients anyway.

Our homemade instant version is full of fruit, nuts and seeds. Jerry has packaged it in single-serving baggies. All that is needed is water and a short stint in the microwave to give you a bowl full of warm, filling goodness. I’ll even make time for that!

With some research, we’ve found that some fruits work better in their freeze-dried form, but others are fine to use in a dried form.

Some fruits reconstitute in water better from the freeze-dried form. It also aids in the prevention of moisture buildup in the packets during storage.

I’m sure we’ll be having lots of fun experimenting with lots of different flavors, but these two are the ones we have started with.

I’m placing my order for peaches and cream. What are some other good flavors to try?
