Jayne Gautreau: Homesick at Christmas time? | Moms

As Christmas approaches, I often find that I start to get a little homesick. I really miss my family in Northern Ireland and it is a little sad that I don’t have my parents, sisters and their families here to celebrate and see the boys enjoy the Christmas festivities.

I know many of you can relate.

Sadly, it can often affect my attitude and how I look at the holiday season. I need to remember that I have been really blessed by a beautiful family here.

God has given us three wonderful boys. The oldest two get really excited about Christmas. So, as I start to feel sadness about being far from home, I try to focus on making memories with my family here.

The things we do as a family to make memories are fairly simple and affordable.

We love to attend one of the local Christmas tree lightings and the Sutherlin truck light parade. We enjoy driving around the local neighborhoods admiring Christmas lights.

The boys and I enjoy baking together, sharing our goodies with families and friends, and we enjoy listening to Christmas music.

Also, attending our Christmas Eve service is a huge part of our Christmas celebration.

I became aware this year that when I focus on the outward things like missing my family at Christmas that I can often miss out on what God is showing me during this important season.

I miss out on understanding and seeing what the true meaning of Christmas is all about. As I started to think about this, I was struck by a very simple verse in the Gospel of Luke:

“But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.” Luke 2:19

(If you read the verses before this, it gives more background.)

When I ponder and treasure the beauty of my Savior’s birth, then I feel like I can truly enjoy the Christmas. It is in experiencing it for myself that I can then share it with my children and the other people I meet.

Whatever your feelings are about Christmas, I pray that you too will take time amidst the baking, shopping and party celebrations to ponder and treasure the true meaning of Christmas in your heart.

I know that when the focus is on Christ, we definitely will not be disappointed by the expectations of the season.

“But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.” Luke 2:19
