Club News: Zonta Club of Roseburg launches HandUp program to help women improve their lives

Give a HandUp with local Zonta

The Zonta Club of Roseburg has developed HandUp, a program to help Douglas County women who are striving to change their lives, but need additional help.

Community assistance agencies can recommend a woman to Zonta members, who interview to pinpoint her most pressing needs: housing, budgeting skills, a driver’s license or bus passes, filing divorce paperwork, clothes for a job interview, educational classes, etc. HandUp is designed to serve the maximum number of women, use limited funds, and help local women attain financial and personal independence.

Lack of ID can prevent access to a variety of services and employment opportunities. HandUp has provided funds for women to get personal ID from the Department of Motor Vehicles, obtain a copy of their birth certificate, or pay the application fee to rent an apartment. In each case, the needed funds were $100 or less, but the impact for the women was enormous.

Contributions to HandUp can be sent to Zonta Service Foundation of Roseburg, P.O. Box 134, Roseburg, 97470. Funds are used locally.
