Breaking News: Winston girl dead in apparent drowning

WINSTON — An 11-year-old Winston girl died Tuesday night after apparently drowning in a bathtub, according to Winston police.

A friend of the victim’s family confirmed the identity of the girl as Jaida Wimberly.

Winston-Dillard Fire EMS and Winston Police Department responded to the 200 block of Michael Lane around 8 p.m. to reports of an unresponsive girl in a bathtub, Winston police Chief Scott Gugel said.

The girl was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg, where she was later pronounced dead.

Efforts to reach the girl’s mother and grandmother were unsuccessful this morning.

The cause of death is under investigation. Police said an autopsy is underway.

Winston-Dillard schools Superintendent Kevin Miller said Jaida had previously been a student at McGovern Elementary School but that her family moved out of the district over the summer.

He said several staff members had worked with Jaida in the past. “Of course, she was a wonderful young lady,” he said.

Grief support will be available for students and staff, Miller said.
