Douglas County residents startled by two loud booms at about noon on Friday were hearing two military jets break the sound barrier high above Roseburg, according to police.
At 11:53 a.m., people from Tri City to Winchester and from Glide to Tenmile called 911 to report two loud, explosion-like noises. Roseburg police Sgt. David Dunn said the department was informed that the booms were two fighter jets catching up with the sound they emitted.
The booms were preceded at about midnight Thursday by cracks and explosions reported by several Roseburg residents on The News-Review’s Facebook page. Dunn said it’s likely those sounds were made by practical jokers having fun with the idea of the Mayan Apocalypse.
