A 9-year-old girl accidentally killed an instructor at a firing range in Arizona this week. She was shooting an Uzi and lost control. The family of the instructor just recently spoke out. Douglas County Mom Marla talks about this and gun safety here.
In other news, the American Academy of Pediatrics announced their recommendation that middle and high schools start later in the day in order to fight teen sleep deprivation. My thoughts are that they just need to go to bed earlier. If they can't wake up for school by 7:45 a.m., how will they ever make it to a job? (And just forget about being a logger)
A teen boy from Ferguson, Missouri who was shot and killed by a police officer August 9 is still a top the headlines. The event has stirred an intense racial. Most recently a $41.5 million lawsuit was filed Thursday by the Black Lawyers for Justice on behalf of five protesters who were arrested, beaten, tear-gassed or shot with rubber bullets in Ferguson, Missouri. Close enough: Seattle's Mars Hill Church Pastor Mark Driscoll is stepping down while charges submitted by 21 former pastors against him are investigated. Nine of Mars Hill Church's 65 current pastors, including the lead pastor of one of its 15 campuses, have called for Mark Driscoll to step down for a full year.
While it is calming down, the ALS #icebucketchallenge is still underway, getting people wet or getting people fired up about the whole thing. ALS has raised approximately 41.8 million dollars thus far. Oregon Governer Kitzhaber to our very own News-Review participated (kind-of...).

If you're like me, we don't have time nor the patience to watch the MTV VMA's anymore; however, you didn't have to watch them to catch Miley Cyrus' MTV VMA date in the news. While she had him take the stage to accept her award, he gave a speech in order to raise awareness for Miley's campaign against youth homelessness. Her date was wanted by Oregon police and hot-off-the-press, just turned himself in.

A dad filmed his daughter taking a series of selfies in the backseat of the car and then uploaded to YouTube, garnering over a million views. At first, I thought the video was hilarious because this exact scene occurs in my house and car several times per week. Upon further thinking, I’m convinced that we need to practice discernment when it comes to our kids and social media. We have to put aside the desire to get a laugh from our friends. The internet doesn’t have limits in this case and kids can be cruel. This vulnerable tween has probably been subject to some pretty mean comments in the hallway at school lately.
