In a league of his own

Sutherlin resident Mary League recently returned from San Francisco, where she met with the remaining seven World War II shipmates of her late husband, Mark League. The men came from California, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota and Missouri. During WWII, Mark League was aboard the USS LST-70, a landing ship tank, which transported amphibious tractors, artillery and military supplies to the beaches. The ship carried 200 enlisted men and 15 officers of both the Coast Guard and the Navy. It participated in many invasions and occupations, including Treasury Island-Bougainville (Cape Torokina), Bismark-Archipelago (Green Islands), Marianas Operation (Guam and Saipan), Iwo Jima …
