Jayne Gautreau: Rest and relax, Moms - you deserve it

As a mommy, we often go to bed tired and wake up tired; those hours of sleep don’t always seem long enough!

Our days pretty much start right as we wake up, not slowing down or stopping until our heads touch the pillow. Between changing diapers, running to doctor appointments, doing laundry, making food and then adding in the other extra jobs that come with motherhood (like searching for my son's lost hermit crab), our days don’t always leave any room just for us to relax.

I have been thinking a lot recently about how we rest and recharge. All of us need some kind of rest in our lives to help us keep on doing what we do.

Even moms can burn out.

I just recently realized that I have a really hard time resting. I remember after my babies were born being told by the nurses to nap while your baby naps. I know I didn’t pay much attention to that and for some reason I have believed a lie that resting makes you lazy. But I am learning that not resting or recharging makes me a very exhausted and unhappy wife and mommy.

So I have been really trying to make an extra effort to fit into my day those things that help me rest and recharge. One of the things I have enjoyed doing is finding a TV series on dvd or netflix to watch. Then during the boys' nap/rest time I sit down with a hot cup of tea and watch my show. I have now officially joined the fan ranks of “Downton Abbey.”

I find when I take that time to just rest, I am able to enjoy my family much more and I am much more effective in the other duties I have to do throughout the day.

I think all moms should have a porch swing or park bench that they can sit on for even a few moments. Just recently we purchased a sky chair. It is amazing and so relaxing to sit in and even a fun place to hang out with your little ones.

I encourage all of you to find just one thing to do that helps you through the day to rest and recharge. I know you will be surprised at how much you need it and enjoy it. Besides, you deserve it, Mama!
