Jayne Gautreau: Give thanks and find joy in laundry and dirty diapers | Moms

"Joy is a function of gratitude — and gratitude is a function of perspective. So take these prompts to help you see and change perspective — give thanks — and live all His joy!" Ann Voskamp

A few months ago we were challenged by our Pastor to keep a daily list of thankfulness for a week. I remember the first day I started I had a grumpy and bad attitude. I kept thinking on that particular day that I didn't have much that I wanted to be thankful about.

I looked around my house, all I could see was a never-ending cycle of dishes, dirty diapers and that pile of laundry that seemed to reproduce over night.

The problem was that I was looking at my circumstances, which at the time just seemed to make me tired and ungrateful. I wasn't seeing the bigger picture.

As I started to write a gratitude list, I was amazed at the things that were actually bringing me joy and causing me to be thankful.

Even though I was tired of changing another poopy diaper, I realized that the poppy diaper belonged to a precious baby boy who makes me smile and my heart soar.

Those dirty dishes meant our family had food to eat and the never-ending laundry made me thankful for the clothes we had to wear.

Writing down my thankful list, changed my attitude and gave me a better perspective. It is amazing when we start to look for the joy in our days we start to notice even small things that we can be thankful for.

Life is challenging and each of us have hard things we are dealing with as mamas and people in general. No matter our circumstances I am pretty sure there is always something that we can recognize in our day that brings us joy and makes us thankful.

This last couple of months has been incredibly busy and exhausting for our family. The other day I was feeling overwhelmed, but I happened to look out my window and a beautiful red leaf tree caught my eye.

I was amazed at how quickly it changed my perspective, just because I stopped and took the time to admire the beauty of God's creation and it made me thankful.

When we are intentional about looking for the joy, we can always find it. Whether it is a phone call from a friend, a hot cup of tea and a few quiet moments to read a book or a quick hug from our children. All these small things can bring us so much joy, because they feed our soul.

As we are approaching the season of thankfulness, I would like to encourage you if you are struggling to find joy to start making a list and I think you will be blessed and surprised about what you have in your daily life that makes you thankful.

When we are intentional about looking for the joy, we can always find it.
