Guest column: Immunization rates increase dramatically in a decade

The Shots for Tots program began in Douglas County in early 2003. At that time, the Douglas County Immunization Coalition decided that immunization clinics would be held for free and on a Saturday to reduce barriers to timely vaccination. Over the past decade, Douglas County’s childhood immunization rates have increased significantly. With the help of many community champions, Douglas County is now recognized as a leader in protecting children from vaccine-preventable diseases, such as measles, hepatitis B, and polio.
