Loon Lake man found dead of gunshot

LOON LAKE — Detectives are conducting a homicide investigation involving a logging company owner who was found dead from a gunshot wound Thursday at his home at Loon Lake, just east of Reedsport, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said today.

Sheriff’s deputies responded about 10:45 a.m. to the home of Paul Frederick Coates at 809 Soup Creek Road. An autopsy is scheduled for today, officials said.

The sheriff’s office listed Coates’ age as 73 years old, though court records show a birth date that would have made him 76 years old.

The multi-agency Douglas County Major Crimes Team is investigating the death. The sheriff’s office declined today to release any other information.

According to public records, Coates owned Coates Logging and was embroiled in an ongoing domestic dispute.

An estranged family member sought a restraining order against Coates in April.

In records filed with the court, the estranged family member alleged Coates had repeatedly threatened to harm relatives and himself.

The family member stated she was motivated to seek the restraining order after Coates accused people of conspiring to take his property and made a threat.

In July, he was fined $500 in Douglas County Circuit Court for violating the order.

Firearms restrictions were added to the restraining order in July and in October. The order was modified in October to allow Coates to access his property in the 1100 block of Loon Lake Road. Coates was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm late last year, but the case was dismissed.
