Fire scorched a vacant former school building on Tenmile Valley Road Wednesday and killed two dogs.
Nine area fire departments responded to the fire call at 12:07 p.m. and spent more than two hours controlling the blaze which started at a fifth-wheel trailer parked next to the former Tenmile Elementary School, Tenmile Rural Fire District Fire Chief Ben Coffel said.
The fire spread from the trailer where a caretaker was living to the school’s gymnasium. Flames charred the outside of the structure and spread into the building’s eaves. The trailer was destroyed.
No one was injured in the fire but two dogs were killed, Coffel said.
Coffel said arson was not suspected and the cause of the blaze remains under investigation. The dollar amount of damages has not been determined.
The building was no longer being used as a school, and was owned by a private individual.
The American Red Cross provided temporary housing, food, clothing, and other resources to the three people affected by the blaze in the 2000 block of Tenmile Valley Road.
