Report of stolen car leads to arrest for something else

A Roseburg man detained Friday afternoon as police investigated a stolen car report was arrested, though not for vehicle theft.

Michael Adam Smith, 29, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree theft, second-degree theft and possession of methamphetamine. He was booked into the Douglas County Jail and released.

Police reported contacting Smith at 3 p.m. in the 4400 block of Highway 99 South. The car Smith was in was reported stolen, but when the owner learned who was driving, he told police he didn’t want charges pressed because Smith is a friend, police said.

Nevertheless, police arrested Smith in connection with two prior thefts and reported finding Smith had a small amount of methamphetamine. Details about the thefts Smith is suspected of were not available.
