SUTHERLIN — Hope Dir was excited and ready to begin a new chapter in her life by running a transitional home for people who were recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. She already had about a dozen people living in the building she had rented in downtown Sutherlin.
SUTHERLIN — It was a friendly, enthusiastic crowd that gathered in the Sutherlin High School gym Friday morning for Democratic U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden’s town hall meeting.
Jaime Yraguen, co-owner of Basco Logging, Inc. in Sutherlin, was elected president of the Associated Oregon Loggers Jan. 20 during the association’s 47th annual convention in Eugene, where he was recognized for his contributions to the association and the Douglas County community.
With just seven weeks to go before Douglas County government pulls its funding from its small town branch libraries, city governments and library supporters are scrambling to determine their future.
SUTHERLIN — With Douglas County branch library closures scheduled for April 1, concerned citizens in Sutherlin held an informal meeting Saturday to find a way to keep their library open after that date.
Josephine County commissioners Tuesday rejected putting a law enforcement levy on the May ballot. That could lead to Josephine County’s jail closing in 2017. If so, Josephine officials shouldn’t look north to Douglas County to house their inmates, said Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin.
It won’t be long before the library system as Douglas County has known it is gone for good. Whether that means the doors will be shuttered for good or the system is replaced by something new isn’t yet clear.
