Hikers to ascend peak near lake

The Friends of the Umpqua Hiking Club is planning a March 16 trip to Collings Mountain, which is southeast of Grants Pass. The mountain is near Applegate Lake. Organizers say the trip will feature a seven-mile moderate shuttle hike with a 1,700-foot elevation gain. The trail winds in and out of madrone, oak and pine forests, with some poison oak along the way. Hikers will have views of the lake, its coves and inlets.
