Marla Smart: All-natural cough syrup remedy | Moms

I love fall! I love the changing colors in the trees, the slowly dipping temperatures where you have slightly cool fingers and toes, but don’t need more than a light jacket or sweater to wear, the pumpkins, gourds, corn stalks for decorating and eating, and the wonderful smell of wood stoves as they warm homes in the neighborhood. Fall is a calming season to me.

I don’t particularly care for the cold I get almost yearly at this time. Runny/stuffy nose, sore throat, sneezing, watery eyes – do I sound like a NyQuil commercial?

And NyQuil is something I can not have, so I have had to do some research to find alternatives. Pinterest to the rescue again!

I found a great little home remedy that makes me feel much better when I start having all the aforementioned symptoms.

MAGGIE’S COUGH REMEDY

Ingredients:

¼ teaspoon cayenne
¼ teaspoon ginger
1 tablespoon cider vinegar (an organic one, like Bragg’s, is preferred)
2 tablespoons water
1 tablespoon honey (use a locally produced raw honey, if possible)

Directions:

Dissolve cayenne and ginger in cider vinegar and water. Add honey and shake well. Take 1 tablespoon as needed for cough.

This is potent albeit watery syrup. It also doesn’t dissolve perfectly. Always shake well before using. If you make this in small batches as the recipe is written, there is no need to refrigerate.

If you prefer, you may refrigerate this. It keeps as long as you need it.

I don’t have very young children in my home, and I haven’t tried it with anyone younger than 13. The dosage for children would probably need to be adjusted. It does have a kick!

Obviously, this should not be given to a baby under the age of 1 since it contains honey, and honey is not safe for infants.

I hope this helps you as much as it does me! I’m saying, “Goodbye sniffles!” and “Hello fall!”

To give credit where it’s due, I found this recipe at http://nancyvienneau.com/blog/articles/home-remedy/ and I am so glad I did!
