WINSTON — A man was shot and killed Saturday in a trailer in the 30 block of North Main Street, Winston police said.
Police identified the victim as Robert Williams, 30, of Winston.
An emergency dispatcher received a 911 call at about 2:45 a.m. reporting that a man had been shot.
Officers arrived and found an unresponsive man with a gunshot wound. The victim was treated at the scene and taken to Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg, where he was declared dead, police said.
The Douglas County Major Crimes Team is assisting Winston police with the homicide investigation.
Neighbor Bill Pease and his daughter, Shelby, said the gunshot woke them up.
“I thought someone slammed a door real hard,” Bill Pease said.
After several minutes, Williams’ roommate ran to their trailer in a panic and said Williams had been shot and that the shooter had run away, Shelby Pease said.
The father and daughter went to the trailer and found Williams unconscious with a gunshot wound to the head.
Shelby Pease said she called 911 and performed CPR on Williams until first responders arrived.
“It was probably the worst vision I’ve ever seen in my life,” Bill Pease said.
Police did not release any information Saturday about a possible motive or suspect. It was rumored at the trailer park that Williams and the shooter were acquainted.
According to neighbors, Williams worked at a Douglas County winery and had lived in the trailer for a few weeks. His place of employment could not be confirmed Saturday.
Shelby Pease said Williams was a good friend.
“He was upfront and loyal. He was a big-hearted guy,” she said.
