Roseburg man suspected of stealing cellphone

A 40-year-old Roseburg man was arrested Friday on suspicion of stealing a cellphone and trying to resell it to the victim.

Roseburg police say a 58-year-old Roseburg woman discovered her cellphone had been stolen from the front desk of her business in the 1000 block of Southeast Stephens Street.

The woman called the number several times, and a man eventually answered, police said.

The man said he was at the Rite Aid on Southeast Stephens Street and would sell the phone back to the woman for $30, according to police. The woman agreed and then called police.

At the Rite Aid, police arrested Tonnell Lamar Williams, who had the phone but denied stealing it. Police arrested Williams and say they found methamphetamine in his possession.

Williams was booked into the Douglas County Jail on suspicion of second-degree theft, possession of methamphetamine and violating probation. He was in custody today and being held without bail.
