American Legion Baseball: Docs beat David Douglas in Star-Spangled Tournament

CORVALLIS — Fact: Dr. Stewart’s has its first three-game winning streak of the American Legion baseball season.

Jake Forrester’s RBI triple with two outs in the top of the sixth inning turned out to be the game-winning hit as the Docs defeated David Douglas, 4-2, on the third day of the Mickey Riley Star-Spangled Tournament Saturday afternoon at Hansen Stadium at Taylor Field.

Dr. Stewart’s (8-16), which is 3-0 in the tournament, will face the Wilson Dirtbags (Dallas/West Salem) for the title at 7 tonight.

“The kids are starting to play good baseball and gain more confidence,” said Dr. Stewart’s coach Scott Shaver. The Docs have outscored their opponents 28-4 and haven’t committed an error in the tourney.

David Douglas (0-3 in the tourney) took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning Saturday, but the Docs pushed over a run in the third to tie it.

Forrester came through with his triple in the sixth to score Triston Garnett, who was running for Greg Suhrstedt. Forrester then scored on a wild pitch to make it a two-run game.

Kyle Westbrooks pitched six innings to get his first win of the season for the Docs. Westbrooks, a graduate of South Umpqua High School, allowed four hits and two runs. He struck out four, walked four and hit one batter.

Roy Benzel pitched a scoreless seventh to get the save, fanning two batters.

“Kyle (Westbrooks) did a good job,” Shaver said. “He’s been trying to find an arm slot that works and is starting to clean it up. He did a good job locating his fastball.”

Forrester finished 2-for-4, doubling and scoring the Docs’ first run in the first. Garnett, Cory Finlay, Zach Wyscaver and Suhrstedt also had hits.

Matt Payne took the loss for the Pirates, allowing six hits and four runs over seven innings. He fanned seven, walked three and hit two batters.

Left-hander Tylan DuBois is the scheduled pitching starter for the Docs tonight.
