Letter: A docent’s view of Wildlife Safari in Winston

Docent view of Wildlife Safari

I am a docent at Wildlife Safari. As a docent, my primary goal is to teach. I also help to prepare the diets for the Village animals and assist at Safari events. Docents become very familiar with the inner workings of Wildlife Safari and share in the joys and sorrows of working with animals.

There are so many joys! We take groups on tours through the drive-thru section or the village and talk to guests about the animals they are seeing. I love how people’s faces light up as they learn about and interact with the animals.

There are also sorrows. In spite of the best possible care and attention, animals we grow to love die due to old age, illness or injury. The animals are checked frequently by zookeepers, volunteers and our highly trained vet staff so that any injury or illness can be dealt with immediately.

Every possible effort is made to keep the animals healthy and safe. Wildlife Safari is an Association of Zoos and Aquariums accredited park. Only 10 percent of zoos and aquariums have standards and practices that qualify for this accreditation.

Docents talk to guests at the Park constantly. We also listen to them. What we hear is that guests are learning about the animals and having a wonderful experience at the same time.
