Camas Valley accident seriously injures two women

CAMAS VALLEY — A North Bend woman faces felony charges after losing control of her station wagon and crashing into an oncoming vehicle Wednesday on Highway 42 west of Camas Valley, seriously injuring a passenger in the other vehicle, according to the Oregon State Police.

Elise M. Grundy, 19, was cited on suspicion of reckless driving, recklessly endangering another person, third-degree assault and driving without insurance.

Police said Grundy was driving west in a 1995 Ford Taurus near Singletree Road at about Milepost 50 at about 11:40 a.m. Witnesses said that just before Grundy lost control on a sharp curve, she was driving about 75 mph and passing vehicles in a no-passing zone, OSP Sgt. Matt Bowersox said.

Grundy’s station wagon slipped sideways, with its passenger side striking an eastbound 2005 Volvo station wagon driven by Charles Bates, 63, of North Bend, troopers said.

Drugs or alcohol are not suspected by police as contributing factors to the crash, nor were conditions wet, Bowersox said.

“This wasn’t caused by the rain,” he said. “It was her driving that caused her to go into the other lane.”

Grundy was taken from the scene by a Camas Valley Fire Department ambulance to Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg, where she was treated and released. She was cited at the hospital and ordered to appear in Douglas County Circuit Court.

The seriously injured passenger in the other vehicle, Ingrid Bates, 60, of North Bend was admitted to Mercy. She was in fair condition this morning, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Charles Bates, her husband, suffered minor injuries, but was walking at the scene and not taken to the hospital.

Grundy and the Bateses were wearing seat belts. Air bags in both vehicles deployed.

Third-degree assault is a Class C felony and involves acting with “reckless indifference to human life” and the use of a “dangerous or deadly” weapon.
