College Baseball: Beavers continue mastery of UP

PORTLAND — Danny Hayes went 4-for-4 with two doubles and Dan Child threw eight strong innings as the fifth-ranked Oregon State baseball team extended its win streak against Portland to 17 with a 5-1 win at a sold-out Joe Etzel Field Wednesday afternoon.

A crowd of 1,007 — with a good number of Beaver fans in attendance — saw Hayes double off the centerfield fence in the sixth inning for his third hit of the day. It drove in two during a three-run sixth that helped keep the Beavers (29-6 overall) record perfect against the Pilots (13-24) dating back to 2007.

Child (4-1), meanwhile, was stellar in his seventh start of the season. The right-hander needed just 72 pitches in eight innings to pick up the win. He scattered one run and four hits while striking out six.

Andy Peterson and Ryan Barnes each had two hits for the Beavers, who finished with nine as a team. Barnes extended his hit streak to a season-long 11 games.

The Beavers get back into Pac-12 Conference play beginning at 5 p.m. Friday at Washington.
