Softball Roundup: Glendale back in title chase with key win

GLENDALE — Friday’s matchup between the top softball teams in District 2, the Glendale Pirates and Yoncalla Eagles, was even tidier than expected. It took 1 hour, 10 minutes for them to get on and off the field.

And it took just one swing for the Pirates to dispense the the Eagles their first loss.

The swing belonged to Lacey Davis, Glendale’s freshman third baseman, and the result was a hit that dropped down the rightfield line to plate Kaitlin Henry and Lizbeth Silva in the bottom of the sixth, ultimately giving the Pirates a 3-2 win.

The Eagles (13-3 overall) had the cord cut on their eight-game winning streak and dropped to 10-1 in District 2. Glendale (12-3), last year’s state runner-up, is the league’s only other one-loss team at 8-1.

“That was a game we needed to win bad,” Glendale coach Andy Owens said. “And it was a dandy.”

The pitching duel of Yoncalla’s Brianne Joslyn and Glendale’s Elizabeth McGuire was to thank for that. Both threw complete games, and McGuire struck out five and allowed just four hits. However, run-scoring singles by Joslyn and Salista Williams gave Yoncalla a 2-1 lead after five innings.

Joslyn yielded seven hits but kept the Pirates quiet until late because she was able to dodge trouble in the fourth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Davis hit a line-drive toward first base but it was snagged for an out.

Davis made the most of her second chance.

Owens also pointed to the defensive contributions of his other freshman infielder, second baseman Chanel Stewart, as a reason for the Pirates’ win.

“Those are big spots for a couple of freshmen,” he said. “They came through for us.”

Lizbeth Silva had Glendale’s other RBI single, scoring Jennifer Staten to tie the game at 1-all in the fourth inning. Silva was the only player in the game with two hits.

The teams split the season series as Yoncalla won on its home field, 9-5, on March 19.
