College Baseball: Beavers, Ducks drop two

SEATTLE — The fifth-ranked Oregon State baseball team dropped a Pac-12 doubleheader to Washington Saturday afternoon at Husky Ballpark, losing 5-1 and 10-3.

An eight-run eighth inning gave the Huskies (11-25, 5-9 Pac-12) the come-from-behind win in Game 2.

The Beavers (29-8, 10-4) took a 3-1 lead when Kavin Keyes ripped a bases-loaded triple. Andrew Moore worked 6 1/3 innings and did not figure in the decision. The right-hander out of North Eugene High allowed seven hits and two runs while striking out four and walking one.

In the opener, Matt Boyd took the loss for the Beavers. The southpaw scattered nine hits and three earned runs over six innings.

UCLA 1, Oregon 0 — In Eugene, the Bruins (25-10, 9-5) scored the only run of the contest in the top of the first inning and three pitchers limited the Ducks to three hits as UCLA clinched the Pac-12 series.

Nick Vander Tuig was the winning pitcher, allowing two hits over seven innings with six strikeouts and two walks. Cole Irvin pitched well in defeat for Oregon (28-10, 12-5), giving up six hits in going the distance. He fanned three and walked one.

Brett Thomas, Mitchelle Tolman and Tyler Baumgartner had hits for the Ducks.

FRIDAY’S GAME

UCLA 1, Oregon 0 — Tommy Thorpe allowed just three hits and one run in seven innings, but the Ducks were shut out in the series opener.

Thorpe (5-4) allowed just three hits, but one of his four walks came back to haunt him. UCLA got its run in the fourth inning when Brian Carroll scored when Pat Valaika hit into a double play. Ryon Healy had two of the Ducks’ four hits.

Adam Plutko (5-2) picked up the win for UCLA allowing just three hits in seven innings, while striking out eight.
