Surgery set for injured Roseburg boy

A Roseburg boy injured when he was hit by a car while riding his bicycle was in good spirits and scheduled to have surgery today to repair his leg, his stepfather said Tuesday.

Andre Heining, 11, was riding west on Harvard Avenue at about 4:15 p.m. Monday when he was struck by a 2006 Dodge Durango as he crossed Stanton Street.

He was listed in fair condition today at Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel in Portland, where he was flown by air ambulance Monday.

Andre will celebrate his 12th birthday in the hospital today.

“He’s doing good,” stepfather Mike Fugate said. “Earlier (Tuesday), he said he wasn’t tired, just hungry.”

Roseburg police said Andre suffered broken bones and internal injuries in an accident that left tire marks on his torso.

Fugate said Andre was taken to Portland so he could receive specialized care.

“We wanted to see him treated up there. It’s a children’s hospital and that’s what they specialize in,” he said. “It was a pretty bad break, and we didn’t know what his insides were like at the time.”

Andre suffered a laceration inside his liver, and his right leg was broken in two places. Fugate said both were clean brakes.

Andre will have surgery to repair the fractures, and doctors may put in screws and rods to help the bones heal, Fugate said.

Andre’s mother, Jamie Fugate, was staying at the hospital with her son.

Andre was biking home from track practice at Fremont Middle School when the accident occurred.

Police said Andre was riding on the sidewalk facing traffic and attempted to cross Stanton Street as Brenda Joyce Andrews, 55, of Roseburg pulled away from a stop sign to turn onto Harvard Avenue.

Andrews was cited on suspicion of failure to obey a traffic control device.
