A Roseburg woman was sentenced Wednesday to more than three years in prison for stealing “a couple hundred thousand dollars” from her employer over several years, Douglas County Deputy District Attorney Shannon Sullivan said.
Jacqueline Rena Parret, 42, was handed a 40-month term by Circuit Judge George Ambrosini. She pleaded no contest June 26 to five counts of first-degree aggravated theft and one count of first-degree theft for stealing money from Grocery Outlet in Roseburg. Parret was a bookkeeper for the grocery store, Sullivan said.
When asked by Ambrosini whether she had anything to say at her sentencing, Parret said, “No.”
Parret was accused of stealing from the store between August 2005 and April 2011, according to court records.
“The investigation started in 2011 when the owners became aware of some thefts that were occurring,” Sullivan said. As her employer scrutinized the business’ spreadsheets, it became apparent that Parret had been stealing, Sullivan said.
“That’s when they discovered that Ms. Parret had been going in and altering the spreadsheets” to hide the thefts, Sullivan said.
Parret was initially charged with 11 counts of aggravated theft — each one alleging theft of more than $10,000 — and one count of first-degree theft for theft of at least $1,000. The first six counts of aggravated theft were dropped after Ambrosini ruled that the statute of limitations had run out on those crimes.
“I thought I had found a way to make it work, but we didn’t, so that’s why they were dismissed,” Sullivan said.
A Grocery Outlet manager reached by telephone this morning said she couldn’t comment on the case until she had spoken with the store owner, who was not immediately available.
Sullivan said Parret began working for the store in approximately 2004.
Parret will be on post-prison supervision for two years following her release and will be ordered to pay restitution. The amount has not been set.
“She has agreed that she is going to be liable for restitution,” Sullivan said. “It’s just the final amount that we haven’t agreed on.”
