Shaun Lowry makes second court appearance in manslaughter case

A Roseburg automotive repair shop operator charged with first-degree manslaughter and drunken driving in the death of a Myrtle Creek woman made a second court appearance Friday.

The appearance by Shaun Everett Lowry, 32, was brief. Douglas County Circuit Judge George Ambrosini granted the defense’s request to return to court at 2:15 p.m. Nov. 4.

At that time, the court may set a trial date or a date to hear Lowry’s plea. Lowry has not yet entered a plea. Defense attorney Andrew Johnson said he needed time to collect information before his client’s next appearance.

Lowry was arrested Aug. 29 after a grand jury indicted him for first-degree manslaughter, drunken driving, second-degree assault, two counts of hit-and-run and two counts of recklessly endangering another person.

Amanda S. Bell, 24, of Myrtle Creek, died from injuries she suffered when she was hit by a vehicle that police say Lowry was driving on Lookingglass Road Aug. 13.

Shawnacy E. Hyatt, 37, of Roseburg was also hit and seriously injured.

On Friday, Lowry, who operates two Shaun’s Precision Lube and Tune shops, appeared in court dressed in a buttoned-down shirt and slacks. It was a sharp contrast to his Aug. 30 courtroom appearance, which he made via video while wearing jail-issued clothes.

According to court records, Lowry was released Aug. 30 after posting $75,000 of his $750,000 bail.

The maximum penalty for first-degree manslaughter is 20 years and a $375,000 fine.

First-degree manslaughter and second-degree assault are both Measure 11 crimes and carry mandatory minimum sentences of 10 years for manslaughter and five years and 10 months for assault.

Lowry is a 1999 graduate of Roseburg High School. He has managed Shaun’s Precision Lube and Tune, 377 Garden Valley Blvd. since 2010. The second shop opened in May in the Roseburg Valley Mall.
