Roseburg and Reedsport men survive boat wreck that killed woman

The two survivors of a boat wreck Sunday that claimed the life of a woman off the north jetty at Coos Bay were identified by officials Wednesday as Roseburg and Reedsport men.

Dan Campbell, 53, of Roseburg and Bruce Geddie, 50, of Reedsport climbed onto the jetty after a 30-foot commercial fishing boat was pushed against the rocks by a wave.

The body of 50-year-old Vera-Jeane Saltzman, whose town of residence was not available, was recovered by the Coast Guard at 6:45 p.m. Monday about 11/2 miles southwest of the entrance to Coos Bay, Chief Petty Officer Charles Morgan said.

The 30-foot wooden hull boat hit the jetty just after sunset Sunday. The Coast Guard was alerted to the accident by the boat’s distress signal.

“They got too close to the north jetty tip and a wave picked them up, and they hit the jetty,” Morgan said. “The first wave spun them around, and the second wave put them up on the jetty.”

Campbell and Geddie crawled up onto the jetty and spent the night there, Morgan said. Monday morning they heard a Coast Guard helicopter and flagged it down. The helicopter picked up the two men and their dog.

A Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station North Bend transported Campbell and Geddie to Bay Area Hospital in Coos Bay at 7:12 a.m. Monday.

A hospital spokeswoman said they were both treated and released.

Morgan said the Coast Guard conducted an extensive search on the water and from the air for the missing woman and expanded the search throughout the day as more debris was found.

“We threw about everything we had at them,” he said.

The Charleston Fire Department and the Coos County Sheriff’s Office helped with the search.

The boat was deemed not salvageable by the Coast Guard.

Coos County Medical Examiner Kris Karcher told The Coos Bay World that Saltzman drowned.
