Dr. Jim Daskalos has come full circle.
Back in the mid-1980s, he and Dr. Paul Norris were partners in starting and operating an urgent care center at 1740 N.W. Goetz St. in Roseburg. Daskalos said it was the first urgent care south of Portland that he was aware of at that time. That urgent care provided medical services for about 10 years and then closed in 1995 after it merged with another urgent care at a different location.
Through the years, Daskalos continued to practice medicine at several Roseburg area facilities and also at a Eugene clinic. Now he has returned to where he started with urgent care. The veteran doctor is the lead provider at Roseburg Urgent Care, which opened Thursday at the Goetz Street address.
“There’s such a need for this type of care,” Daskalos said. “There’s only one other in town and it’s extremely busy. There’s a huge demand for that kind of care, the in-between cases, handling the less emergency-type situations.”
Those cases include non-life threatening injuries and illnesses such as flu, coughs, sore throats, cuts, sprains and strains.
Other providers at the facility are Dr. Matt Driver, Dr. Alex Morley, Dr. Howard Stein, Dr. Audrey Shank, a family nurse practitioner Mitch Boriskin, physician assistant Kerry Harrington and several nurses. Some of the staff previously worked at Evergreen Urgent Care, the other such facility in Roseburg.
Roseburg Urgent Care is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week. Appointments are not necessary, but can be made online to help expedite care.
The 3,000-square-foot building, which had housed a few other businesses since 1995, underwent a two-month remodel to return it to an urgent care center. It now has six exam rooms and an electronic medical records system. Laboratory services are also available on site.
Roseburg Urgent Care is owned by a group of 12 emergency and occupational health physicians from the Eugene area. The group owns four other urgent care facilities: two in Eugene, one in Springfield and another in Junction City.
“With health care reform, there is a tremendous need for urgent care,” said Dr. Richard Abraham, CEO of the ownership group. “There’s a need for medical care on the spot.”
Roseburg Urgent Care’s phone number is 541-672-4789. Its website is roseburgurgentcare.com.
Rolling down the street
After 3½ years at one lot next to Stephens Street in Roseburg, Victor Hansen decided he needed more space for his used car business.
So he closed his business at 1062 N.E. Stephens St. on Nov. 15 and re-opened Hansen’s Auto Center at 2130 N.E. Stephens St. about a month later.
“I started out with one car, but then simply outgrew the lot,” he said of making the move to where he could display about 70 cars, almost three times the number he previously could show.
His new location also has a shop with a lift. Don Haskett is the center’s mechanic.
“It’s a good business,” Hansen said. “We sell cars from $500 to $29,000. We’ve got a little bit of everything; cars for everybody.”
The business phone number for the auto center is 541-673-2212.
