Age 82, passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2014. She was born June 27, 1931, in Columbus, Ohio, to Charles “Ted” E. and Dorothy A. (Herderick) Bateman. Her family moved often following her father’s work until she was 9 years of age. They settled in Alliance, Ohio in 1940. She graduated from Alliance High School in 1949 after which she was employed as a Secretary/Bookkeeper at Bateman’s Trailer Store until 1955. The remainder of her life she was happily employed by her husband and six children as their caregiver.
December 24, 1950 she married the love of her life, John Earl Murphy, Jr., also of Alliance, Ohio. The summer of 1955 after John graduated from College they moved to Pilot Knob, Missouri. They lived in the Arcadia Valley Community 13 years until John was transferred to Riddle, Oregon. They headed West with six children in tow and settled three miles from Canyonville on September 23, 1968, where she was still living at the time of her death.
She became a member of the Methodist Church in 1956 in Arcadia, Mo, and transferred to the Canyonville United Methodist Church in 1968. She served as a Trustee, Ad Council Secretary and numerous other committees in service to her faith. She has also been a member of the South Umpqua Booster Club, Hanna Ladies Nickel Lunch Bunch, and the Douglas County Genealogical Society.
Her hobbies were mostly home oriented: Gardening, Sewing, Genealogy, Family Photo Albums, and singing for her own enjoyment. Before moving to Oregon, Square Dancing was a big part of her life.
She is survived by her six children: Ted (Rhonda) of Anchorage, Alaska; Joy (Robert Morin) of Cottage Grove; John III (Brenda) of St. Helens; Michael (Kathleen) of Clayton, Indiana; Bruce (Arlene) of Oregon City; and Cynthia (Greg O’Neill) of Canyonville and April Woolf (Dean) of Alliance, OH; grandchildren: Christopher; Lindsay; Sean; Rachelle; Renee; Ross; Brooke; Andrew; Nicholas; Michelle; Bruce Jr.; Robyn; Cary; Benjamin and Gregory; great-grandchildren: Jade, Payton, Landon, Stella, Cash, Callaway and Bryken; also one sister, Melodie Beall in Ohio and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Her parents; husband, John of 61 1/2 years; sister, Bernice; granddaughter, Amber; and great-grandson, Cale all preceded her in death.
Deedee was a most loving wife and mother. The cheerful sound of her giggle could never be duplicated and is the common thread remembered by all of those who loved her. The heavens will rejoice upon her arrival.
Mountain View Funeral Home and Crematory of Myrtle Creek, Oregon, were in charge of the cremation.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Canyonville United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 11:00.
A private burial service will be held at the Roseburg Veterans Cemetery where she will be laid to rest with her husband John.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to either the Canyonville United Methodist Church or the Canyonville VFW Post #5714 for their Veterans Memorial Fund
