John A. Links

A loving and supportive father, John Allen Links, 55, of Longview, WA, passed away Monday, March 3, 2014, at the Hospice Care Center surrounded by family and his dog at his feet.

He was born November 14, 1958, in Bend, OR, to Tom and Gerda (Bromley) Links. In the 1960s John was a member of the Douglas County Swim Team and broke several long-standing records.

John attended Roseburg High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in forestry from the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho, where he graduated summa cum laude. He lived in Roseburg, OR, until 1990 and Salem, OR, until 1995 when he moved to Longview.

John had a lifelong career in forestry, most recently as a self-employed timber cruiser. He was a hard-working, strong-willed man. He enjoyed woodworking, trips to the beach, nature hikes, drawing and painting. He loved spending time with his family and going for walks and drives with his dog, Sparky. If you were a dog, you wanted to be John’s dog.

Survivors include two daughters, Meredith Links and Aleecia Links, both of Longview; a son, Clayton Links of Renton, WA; two sisters, Jean Woodrich of Roseburg and Margaret “Maggie” Lally of Camas Valley, OR; three brothers, Mark Links and Steve Links, both of Roseburg and Dan Links of Sweet Home, OR; and a grandson, Riddick Stillson of Longview.

A celebration of John’s life is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 1228 Larson Road, Roseburg, OR 97471.

Arrangements are by Cascade Northwest Funeral Chapel at Green Hills Memorial Gardens & Crematory.
