George William Marsh

Age 90, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on March 20, 2014. George was born August 2, 1923 to parents Arthur H and Hazel Smith Marsh in Lookinglass, Oregon, where he lived his entire life. He was enrolled in Oregon State College at the time of his enlistment into the US Air Force. George was a B25 Pilot in the European theater during WWII and remained in the US Air force reserves until his retirement as Lt. Colonel.

George managed the Marsh Ranch Orchards in Lookingglass and in 1968 he accepted a position with the Douglas County Assessor’s Office. In 1976, he was elected and served two terms as the Douglas County Assessor. George retired from the county in 1984.

George enjoyed the natural beauty of Oregon and spent much of his free time hunting and fishing. After he retired, he and Ida, the love of his life for 69 years, traveled extensively across the US and abroad.

George had a special interest in childhood education and served several terms on the Winston-Dillard school board. He was a founding board member of Umpqua Community College. He was an active member of the Douglas County Farmers CO-OP and served many terms on the governing board.

George was a member of WellSpring Bible Fellowship.

George is survived by his spouse, Ida “Terry” Marsh; sons: Bill (and Corliss) Marsh, Dan (and Elzina) Marsh, Dave (and Christy) Marsh; daughters: Judy (and Mark Wing), Pam (and Lance Westland); nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Graveside memorial with Military presentation will be held later at the Lookingglass Valley Cemetery, announcement to follow.
