From the Pulpit: True spirit of Easter is known to the wise

The story is told of a man who invited his best friend to attend church with him on Easter. The friend did not usually go to church, but since it was Easter Sunday, he agreed to go.

As the church service began, he was greeted with friendly handshakes and smiles. Everyone was singing praises to the Lord. Hands were upraised in worship and heartfelt prayers were made for those at the altar. The pastor preached from the Bible, and proclaimed that the resurrection of Jesus is the real meaning of Easter.

After the service, the friend turned to go. But before leaving, he said, “Thank you for inviting me to church, but the whole experience seemed pretty foolish. All those people joyfully singing and praying to someone they can’t see. The pastor saying Jesus was crucified and then rose from the dead three days later. You actually believe that is the real meaning of Easter?”

The Christian man was sorry his friend felt that way, but did accept his invitation to have Easter dinner with his family. Soon they were watching as the friend’s small children as they were busy opening their Easter gifts of cuddly bunnies and chocolate eggs.

All the while, the man and his wife were busy telling their children the Easter Bunny had brought the gifts especially for them. After dinner, the man went outside and hid dozens of hard-boiled eggs for the children to seek. The children were told that the Easter Bunny had come and hid them.

Afterwards, it was time for the Christian man to go home. As he was leaving, he turned to his friend and said, “Thank you for the fine dinner.

“However, you say that our church service was ‘foolishness’ because we believe that Easter is a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus. Yet you celebrate Easter by telling your children about bunnies that secretly lay chocolate and hard-boiled eggs just for them?

“To me, that’s really ‘Easter Foolishness!’”

On Easter, you can experience for yourself the resurrection power of Jesus! By prayer and faith, receive Jesus as your Lord and Savior.

He is alive, and he loves you.

Let’s pray together: Dear Lord Jesus, I believe you died on that horrible cross and rose again for me. Please forgive my mistakes and sins and be my Lord and Savior. Thank you for forgiving me and loving me. Amen.
