Emma was born on February 13, 1929, and passed on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at age 85.
She was a native born resident of Roseburg, and called Melrose home for over 40 years.
Emma was the daughter of early-day Garden Valley residents Thomas and Kittie Mayes Winniford. She is preceding in death by her husband, Henry L. (Chub) Handy in 1972, and eldest son, Larry L. Handy in 2009; also her brother, Tom in 2013. Emma is survived by two sons, David Henry Handy and Thomas George Handy, both of Roseburg; three grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.
Emma graduated from Roseburg High in 1944 at age 15, went on to Business School and in the early ‘50s traveled around the world. In 1953 she married Henry L.(Chub) Handy of Roseburg and began her career as a Court Reporter for Douglas County Courthouse where she worked until 1968. She quit and started doing freelance Court Reporting and her career was 50 years long, also she was a licensed Real Estate Agent for that 50 years too, as well as being a licensed Tax Consultant and a Notary Public until the time of her death. In 2004 Emma was recognized by Oregon Court Reporter Association with a plaque of special appreciation. Surprisingly Emma found time for many vacations and trips to the National Court Reporters Associations meetings, the National Women’s Bowling Association meetings held every year across the whole nation. She bowled on the same team, the same league, for 50 years from the time Indian Lanes opened until the time it closed. She served as president and secretary and treasurer of many clubs and organizations as well. Emma held speed records for typing in the excess of 200 words per minute!
Emma will be missed by her family and friends, bowling buddies and all who knew and worked with her.
