Robert Kenith Whitson

Age 73, of Myrtle Creek, Oregon, passed away at his home on Friday, April 11, 2014, due to cancer, with his family by his side. Bob was born in Hawthorne, California, to the late Clyde and Doris Whitson. Bob worked for MGM Grand Studios, Fox Studios and owned B & C Enterprises, a landscaping business with his father for many years before moving his family and business to Dillard, Oregon, in 1969. He was also a skilled subcontracting carpenter, as well as working for Nelson and Pyle. Bob’s passion was music. An accomplished musician, Bob played bass with many bands over the years in the Los Angeles and Oregon areas. He began with the band The Virtues, with his cousin Timm and lifelong friend Curtis Frye. He ended his musical career with the Dixie Lee & The Goodnews Blues Band that he shared with his sister Dixie Quiroz.

Bob Loved and enjoyed going to the Lions drag strip in Long Beach, California. Not only to watch but to race in as well. He also enjoyed hunting in Baja, California and Mexico, fishing, crabbing and yearly camping trips with his family. You could also find him along the river with his father panning for gold or at a classic car show. Cruising Graffiti, The Black Berry Festival or anywhere an event as such type was taking place, he was there in his “Lemon Drop” a 31’ Ford Coupe Roadster. He was also in the process of restoring another classic beauty, a 1968 Mercury Cougar. Bob had a dream of owning a Harley and in 2007; he fulfilled that dream prior to being diagnosed with cancer.

Bob is survived by his three children: daughters, Christy Petty and husband Ron; Kim Kohlmeyer; son, Curt Whitson and wife Nikki; four grandchildren: Jason Tompkins, Richelle Prowell, Chad Whitson and Asheley Petty; one great-granddaughter, Aubrey Petty; sister, Dixie Quiroz and husband Bob; nephews, Robert “Poncho” Quiroz and wife Shelly, Ron and Ray Quiroz; five great nieces and nephews, Keela Sutton and husband Jake, Maria Quiroz, Dezirae Quiroz, Dillon Sutton and Macy Sutton; cousins, Timm Daughtrey and his family; Carolyn Bangs and her family; Bob also leaves behind his close friends Danny Daniels, Curtis Frye and Richard Brown.

He is preceded in death by his father, Clyde Whitson; mother, Doris Taylor-Whitson and sister, Joan Marlene Whitson.

Bob was loved and cared for by so many. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends near and far. His children would like to thank Bob, Dixie, Ray, and Ron Quiroz for helping care for their father for the last years of his life. They would also like to thank Corrina and Amedisys Hospice Care and staff for all the loving care they provided for their father. No services with be held at this time.
