Onalee Ruth Koth

Onalee, A long time resident, passed away on Friday, April 4, 2014 at her home, in Roseburg, Oregon, at the age of 79. She was born on April 3, 1935, in Medford, Oregon, to Laurence Clauf and Ruth Catherine (Schubert) Dau.

Onalee grew up in Medford, Oregon, and moved to Eugene, Oregon, in the third grade. She graduated from Eugene high school in Eugene, Oregon, in 1953. After high school she attended the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon, where she received a Bachelor’s degree in Education. She taught elementary education until the birth of her children, Douglas Henry in 1962 and Deona Kristine in 1965. Later she went back to the University of Oregon, completing a Masters of Education Degree in 1978.

Onalee married Henry Karl Koth on August 15, 1959 in Eugene, Oregon. They were happily married for 34 years, until his death in 1994.

She loved her children dearly, and they were the light of her life. She spent many hours leading scouts and helping out at her children’s school and sporting events. Her favorite family times were the camping trips taken during hunting season and fishing trips to Winchester Bay with the extended family. Onalee treasured her role as “Grandma O” and cherished visits with her grandchildren. She was a devoted sister, talking almost daily to her brother, David, and sister, Penny. Family was very important to Onalee and she always put them first.

Onalee was a long time and very active member of the Roseburg First United Methodist Church. She lived by the words, “Let Go and Let God”. Her activities in the church included starting and being in charge of the Prayer Shawl Ministry; participating in bell choir; working with the FISH Food Bank; being a leader in the Rebekah Circle; and working with the church’s youth.

Onalee was on the board of director’s for the Douglas Health and Wellness Center, AWAKE and Better Breathers. She was a member of ABWA and was honored as Woman of the Year in 2003.

Onalee was an avid reader. She enjoyed knitting, sewing and other crafts.

She is preceded in death by both her parents and her husband. Onalee is survived and will be dearly missed by her son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Monica (Hanson) Koth of Fremont, California; her daughter and son-in-law, Deona and Trey Rigert of Hood River, Oregon; her brother and sister-in-law, David and Mary Dau of Westfield, New Jersey; her sister and brother-in-law, Penny and Lerry Lyons, of Eugene, Oregon; her five grandchildren, Payton, Carter, Chace, Marisa, and Jennica; her nephews, Carl, Eric, Ronald and Martin, her grandniece Emily; her grandnephew Trenton and other relatives.

A memorial service was held, Saturday, April 19, 2014, at the Roseburg First United Methodist Church.
