Harry Alvin Sargent passed away peacefully and with his family by his side on April 13, 2014, at the age of 77. Harry was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He was a descendant of Alvin and Edna Sargent.
Harry moved to Upland, California, in May 1962, to follow his early career in the auto repair business. He soon found that this was one of his strongest passions in life. In 1964 shortly after arriving in California, him and his wife Barbara founded Sargent’s Auto Body. They ran this business until 1978 when Harry took a trip to Roseburg, Oregon for a vacation with a friend from California. Harry enjoyed Roseburg so much he purchased a home.
In 1980, Harry purchased 20 acres in the Green district and began another lifelong passion of developing land and building industrial buildings. Harry built several buildings in the area and opened another Auto Body Shop because his friends wanted their vehicles fixed and Harry couldn’t allow someone else to do it. Sargent’s Body Shop in Roseburg went in business and remained until 1992. Harry brought one of his son’s into the business, Harry Jr., and he continues to follow in the family business. In 1999, he built River Bend RV Park. Harry and Barbara owned that business until 2001, where he made many lifelong friends.
There were several attributes that could describe Harry…Giving, Kind, Caring, Funny and the love of people. If you were his friend you knew that Harry would be there to help you. He would never say no to anyone if they needed help. Harry believed in friendships in a very strong way. If you weren’t Harry’s friend you became one because of his personality.
He was a man of incredible sense of humor. Harry would be in the center of attention telling stories and making more friends no matter where he went. Later in life, even at the doctor’s office he would befriend a nurse and make their day by his sense of humor. There wasn’t a time or situation where he wouldn’t be able to make a person laugh.
Harry had many passions and hobbies in his life: watching his kid’s sports, antiques, developing land, automobiles and auto racing. Harry was part of the Baja 1000 and took 3rd place one year. He was also a born salesman. He would convince most anyone that their price was too high and that they should lower it for him…his infectious personality allowed for this.
Harry is survived by his wife of 51 years Barbara Sargent; sister Loretta Sargent; three children: Harry Jr., Karen (fiancée Daniel James Jr), son Kelly and his wife Patty); five grandchildren: Marcus, Harrison, Jessica, Lindsey and AJ. Harry also leaves behind Tessa Belle Sargent, his boxer dog that brought great joy to him later in life.
The family would like to thank to his doctors, Hospice nurses (especially Toni Osborne), Pastor John Stenbeck, LaRee Shady and family friends who cared for him at the end of his life.
There will be no funeral. A ‘potluck’ celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. on June 14, 2014, at 948 Page Rd, Winchester.
