Passed away Saturday, June 7, 2014, at the age of 93. Ruth was born in LaSalle, CO to Charley and Gertrude Schley on November 18, 1920. After graduating from Greeley High School, she worked for the telephone company as a switchboard operator. She met her future husband, Orlo D. Naugle through her uncle Roy Crain. They married in 1940, in Cheyenne, WY. In the early years of her marriage, she worked for the Greeley Police Dept. in various positions. She had two daughters, Thelma and Naomi, and a son, Robert. She was very proud of being a Brownie and Girl Scout leader for her two daughters. She and Orlo moved their family to Roseburg in 1959, only two weeks after the world-famous “blast” devastated downtown. She worked retail in Roseburg for Lavern’s, Penny’s, and Harvard Ave Drug Store before getting her associate librarian degree at UCC. Her love of books showed through her job as the librarian at Eastwood Elementary School. The children were always a rewarding challenge, and she was forever amazed at what they remembered and how inquisitive they were. She was always learning from them. She was a life member and past Matron of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter #8, life member and past Matron of the Order of the Amaranth, Douglas Ct #18, member of Zuleima #13 Daughters of the Nile, and Past Guardian of Jobs Daughters, Bethel #8. She volunteered over 1,000 hours at the Veterans Hospital and conducted countless wildlife tours for school children for the Audubon Society around the Roseburg duck pond. She made “surgery” dolls for the Shriner’s Children Hospital in Portland and helped with her church newsletter. She cherished good friends from Jolly Circle Group, and spent countless hours enjoying her quilting classes. She was proud of the hard work and accomplishments of her six grandchildren, each with a professional degree. Ruth was a kind and giving person, always helping and seeing to the well-being of others in her life. She had a ready smile and a delightful sense of humor. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Jack Schley, and her husband Orlo. She’s survived by her daughters, Thelma Nielsen of Grants Pass Naomi O’Mara of Roseburg, her son Bob Naugle and his wife Shirley of Roseburg, six grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. Her family wants to thank Manor House and Hospice for the excellent care given to their mother and grandmother. Ruth requested donations given in her name be to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, 3101 S.W. Sam Jackson Park Rd., Portland, Or 97239. A memorial service will be held for family members at a future date.
